Do you want to find out someone's IP address? Or your own? Or do you want to find out what country an email is from? You can do it by tracing an IP address. It is not very hard to do, and we'll show you how.

* Method 1 of 4: Website IP Address

1. Open a command console. On a Mac, it's called Terminal and it's in the Utilities folder. On a PC, click on Start, then "All Programs", then Accessories, and then Command Prompt. This will let us ping any website to find out the IP address of that website.

2. Ping an address. This sends a signal out to a URL which then bounces back with the website information attached, and how long the round trip took.
* Type "ping [URL]" - example: ping www.facebook.com.

3. Press return/enter. The IP address should appear beside the website name, followed by how many seconds or milliseconds the ping took.

* The format of an IP address is numeric, written as four numbers separated by periods. For Facebook, the IP address is 69.171.237.16.

* Method 2 of 4: Email IP Address

1. Open your email client. To find the IP of an email sent to you, you can investigate the message's headers—that stuff that looks like a keyboard exploded on the message

2. Show headers. Open a message. From the View menu, select the option that lets you view all or extended headers, and your To/From section will blossom with new information.

* On a Mac, click View > Message > All Headers
* On a PC, on Options, click the dialogue box launcher > Message Options dialogue box (Properties) > Internet Headers
* Next to the Received section you will see something like "from..... and an IP address as described above. Select one of those, and copy it to the clipboard. In this case, we'll select 66.220.155.163, and copy it. We can see that it says Received from mx-out.facebook.com, so we'll do a test to see if that's accurate.

3. Open a command console. This is described above. Only this time, instead of doing a ping on a known address, we're going to run a whois check.

* In your terminal window, by the flashing cursor, type whois 66.220.155.163, and press Enter. The information will be sent out to a database, queried, and then returned with the registration information for that IP address.

* In this case, we can verify that the message was sent through Facebook. Notice we also have the domain registrar's full address.

4. Use an alternative lookup. You may not want to use the terminal, or perhaps it's not loaded on your computer. Instead, you can try using an Internet lookup, such as ip-lookup, which gives you much the same information as a whois lookup, and in many cases, much more.

* Method 3 of 4: Geo-location of an IP Address

1. Use the methods described above to obtain the IP number you wish to check.

2. Go to a website that will allow you to look up IP address information. Google "IP Lookup" or "IP Geolocation" for a large list of sites that will freely offer this service.
3. Understand what you can and cannot learn from the IP address:

* Which internet service provider (ISP) the user is using. In some cases this may be the user's company (e.g. Ford.com). In other cases it may be just one of the large ISPs such as ATT or Comcast.
* The approximate physical location of the user (e.g. Palo Alto, California.)
* Recognize that usually you will not learn the actual name of the person doing at that IP address (e.g. Joe Smith). ISPs will typically only release such information under a court order.

* Method 4 of 4: Traceroute

1. Open a command console as described above. On Windows, enter tracert <IP address>. On UNIX (including Linux and Macintosh OS X), open a shell and use the command traceroute <IP address>, and how long each step takes.

There are infinitely many ways to program computers. Ultimately, it is the choice of the programmer how to accomplish what they need. There are, however, many "best practices" for styles and function usage for better compilation and safer programs. Some care should be taken to ensure that future programmers (including yourself) on your project can read and understand your code.

1. Download a C++ IDE (integrated development environment) such as Eclipse, Netbeans, and CodeBlocks, or you can use a plain text editor such as Notepad++ or VIM. You can also run programs from the command line, in that case any text-editor will suffice. It might be handy to choose an editor which supports syntax highlighting and line-numbers. Most programmers find that unix-like systems (linux, OS X, BSD) are the best environments for development.

2. Create a main program file. The main file must include a function called main(). This is where execution of the program begins. From here, you should be calling functions, instantiating classes, etc. Other files of your application as well as libraries can be included into this file.

3. Begin writing your program. Insert your code or the program that you need to build (see below for a few examples). Learn the syntax, symmantics, Object-Oriented Programming paradigms, data structions, algorithm designs such as linked lists, priority queues, etc. C++ is not an easy language to program in, but doing so teaches you the fundamentals that extend to all programing languages.

4. Insert comments in your code. Explain what your functions do and what variables are for. Choose clear names for variables and functions. Capitalize the names of global variables. In general: make sure that anyone reading your code can understand it.

5.  Use proper indenting in your code. Again, see the examples below.

6.  Compile your code with

To program in Java (not JavaScript, an unrelated language), you need a compiler, a program to convert Java source code to bytecode. In the old days, the only option was Sun's JDK; but now you have many options, including the GNU GCJ which creates class files or native exe files, and jikes, IBM's open source contribution. You also will need a Java virtual machine, which is a "machine within a machine" which understands Java bytecodes and translates them into machine language on the target processor. There are many available, but you can never go wrong with the javac compiler and java JRE virtual machine included with Sun's Java standard edition.

Steps

1. Download the correct package for your platform. Windows and Solaris users should visit Oracle's Java SE page to download a package, Macintosh users will find they already have the Java SE installed. For maximum portability, it may be better to get an older edition; not all your potential users will have the latest JVM installed. Alternatively, use an open-source or other third-party compiler such as GCJ or jikes, and compile to a native executable or run it with the Java JRE.

2. Learn to use an IDE. Eclipse and NetBeans are two of many other IDEs that are here to help us write the code easier -- they report any errors as you code, they help with methods, imports and many more.

3. Learn Edit-Compile-Test cycle. You should start with the Hello World program.

4.  Create your own or edit other people's class(es).

5. Compile to class file(s)

6. Run the program with the Java executable, or as an applet in a browser. If the functionality isn't correct, or you want to add more features, start again at step 1.

7. If you can afford it, buy a good book about Java programming and carefully read the beginning. With this language, the beginning is more difficult than later steps.

8. Check out sites such as Cksstudios.com, Javacooperation, Cokeandcode and Oracle's website for resources/tutorials.

9. Take advantage of the object oriented paradigm. Learn how to use inheritance, classes, polymorphism and encapsulation to increase the efficiency of your code. Being object oriented is one of Java's strong points, so use it fully.

10. Read up and follow a Java tutorial (one of the first recommended tutorials could be a tutorial on collections).
